Stars Are Born
Stars Are Born (2016) was created for The Rainbow CHAIRity, an initiative that brings Rainbow Centre students together with artists to transform over fifty child-sized chairs into unique artworks. Designed as an inclusive collaboration—from idea to paintbrush—the project celebrates children of diverse abilities, including those with autism, epilepsy, intellectual disabilities, visual or hearing impairments, and global developmental delay. Each chair becomes both an artwork and an invitation to recognise the creativity, resilience, and potential of these young artists, while also raising funds for Rainbow Centre’s new Margaret Drive extension.
For her contribution, Kumari Nahappan imagined a chair titled Stars Are Born, inspired by the belief that every child shines in their own way. Against a deep blue, hand-mixed night sky, she designed seven stars—each painted in one of the rainbow’s colours, symbolising the children and their connection to Rainbow Centre. Working alongside a student, Kumari guided the painting process using stencils and gentle collaboration. The result is a constellation of individuality and hope: a reminder to pause, look up, and honour the brilliance that emerges when creativity, patience, and inclusion meet.
