Women of Power 2023
Kumari Nahappan is a prominent artist in Southeast Asia who is known to fuse the tenets of contemporary art with her cultural heritage. Her illustrious career spanning over three decades is based on her interdisciplinary practice in painting, sculpture and installations
So respected and loved is her body of work that she has been commissioned to create iconic landmarks in Singapore, where they seamlessly integrate with public spaces. Said sculptures include Saga at Changi Airport and Nutmeg & Mace at ION Orchard. Beyond their aesthetic value, her pieces carry profound meaning in their exploration of the concept of “seeds in rituals” – prompting contemplation on the cycle of life, growth and interconnectedness; and weaving a visual narrative that transcends cultural divides and appeals to our shared humanity.
In addition to her artistic practice, Kumari is also deeply committed to cultural preservation and collaboration, particularly in multiple projects that celebrate Tamil heritage. Not new to spreading her wings beyond our borders, she participated in the Anima Mundi art fair in Venice last year, where she conceived the thought-provoking installation Chanting: Rosary
Her driving force is rooted in the transformative power of passion. “Passion evolves. It is not a given nor a product. Patience and nurturing are key to this growth which, in time, becomes part of you,” she says.
For others like her, Kumari encourages continuous growth and evolution. She advises individuals to nurture their beliefs, embrace setbacks as opportunities for personal development, and fearlessly pursue their artistic vision. By doing so, they can create a ripple effect that inspires others to explore their own cultural identities and celebrate the transformative power of art.
