Its NOW or NEVER is a two-part display dedicated to showcase the latest acquisitions of contemporary art by the newly energised Singapore Art Museum. As the champion of contemporary art and emerging artists in Singapore, it is apt for us to start off with a selection of our key 2-D works by Singaporean and Singapore-based artists. Another display in late February 2011 will focus on key acquisitions of Southeast Asian works with an emphasis on complex installations, New SAM attempts to ask our visitors two questions what constitutes Contemporary Art and what makes it contemporary in the eyes of our modern society?
Following the end of World War II, there was a strong urge to leave the modern world behind and enter into a new contemporary era. This act of looking forward signaled a desire to forget a collective painful past. In the 21st century, tensions between what is considered modern art and what constitutes contemporary art arise in the visual arts landscape as some artists shift from making observations of their world. Instead, they use their art to question their world more intently and perhaps even more critically.

Travelling from the Museum of World Cultures in Basel, Kumari Nahappan's works 'Red, Hot & Cool' reaches the shores of Amsterdam, and will be featured as part of the exhibition 'Red' in Tropenmuseum. The exhibition explores red as a symbolic colour and displays personal interpretation and symbolic meaning differ per nation, per culture and even per person.
An enthrallment to the colour red has been instrumental in kumari's life, from her fascination with vibrant red flowers in her childhood to her comprehension of chilies and spices employed in Indian cooking as she grew older. kumari understood the colour to be metaphoric of energy in its rawest form, thus a medium which expressed and identified a plethora of emotions. Through application of colour in her art, she is able to communicate how every red has a story to tell, addressing different feelings and different moods. The purest reds parallel the excitement and sadness of Surya (solar deity of the Hindus) as it rises and sets. Through its multiple levels of personality, the colour speaks of a universal energy that cannot be contained. Through an exploration of the colour, kumari's works communicate an active energy which is both fundamental to and universal in daily life.

The Synchronic Fire is the first in a series of exhibitions for kumari in collaboration with the Apparao Galleries. Leading the progressive art scene in India, the Apparao Galleries have successfully nurtured and communicated contemporary art to existing and new collectors over the past 22 years, whilst continuing to enhance appreciation of the visual arts in India.
The exhibition showcases a selection seminal to kumari's collection of bronzes, alongside a preview of her icon and shakti painting series. The collection submerges the viewer with the emotional qualities of kumari's works, through exploring the active power in kumari's vibrant colours and patination techniques. Each piece engages a dynamic relationship between energy, time, space and ritual, concepts puissant to life.
